THE VERTEX – ABOUND IN THESE THINGS 9 (ABUNDANT FRUIT-BEARERS 22)
” But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ“ 2 Peter 1:5-8 (NKJV).
To crown the items for fruitfulness, we began to look into the two transcending verities:
1. Brotherly Kindness (or Brotherly Love) and
2. LOVE.
We understood that “Brotherly Love”, philadelphia, means “fraternal love”, to have affection for a brother.
It refers to the love members of a family held for each other and would not usually be used to describe the love between members of different families.
The practice of brotherly love is essential in our fruit-bearing (see previous episode). This is more because, it is our testimony of being disciples of Jesus (John 13:35). (Read LOVING ONE ANOTHER Part 1 and 2).
This brotherly love, philadelphia, is different from Agape.
Agape is the vertex of divine expression. This love doesn’t only gravitate towards the brethren in the faith. This spreads to all men and all things.
Agape is unconditional, sacrificial love.
This is not just the love God demonstrates (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9), that is what God is (1Jn 4:8,16), and He supplies and enables us to walk in this love also.
This love of God (Agape) is stronger and greater in ability and capacity, respectively.
Agape is not based on pleasant emotions or good feelings that might result from a physical attraction or a familial bond. Agape is a choice which impels you to sacrifice for others or serve them without conditions.
This love is beyond the domain of men. It is beyond the standard of men. This is a higher standard of love. And no man can meet its demand. This is why God designed it to only be supplied to you by Himself.
This love doesn’t work just by utterance. It works by life. And you cannot wake up one day to just start loving as He has loved you. Unless you have received Him into you.
Agape is distributed into us in Christ by the Holy Spirit. The day we received the Holy Spirit at our new birth, is cascaded the very love of Christ into us.
We therefore, have all that is needed to lavishly supply the love of Christ in all situations.
Beloved when these things (faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love) be in you and abound you shall not be barren.
“These things”, are part of the all things granted us by the divine power of God.
The abounding or the multiplying of these eternal verities, shall constitute us into fruitfulness in the fullness of the knowledge of Christ.
These things are not necessarily a matter of correcting our behaviour or improving ourselves. They are in reality the elements of our constitution.
Engage these ingredients to bear much more fruits in faith.
“ Since these virtues are already planted deep within, and you possess them in abundant supply, they will keep you from being inactive or fruitless in your pursuit of knowing Jesus Christ more intimately.“ 2 Peter 1:8 (TPT).
